Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How
can massage be beneficial to my health?
A. Stress is the
number one cause of disease in this country. As a society, we tend to
internalize stress every day. Instead of responding naturally to the "fight or
flight response" we clench our teeth and tighten our shoulders and lower back.
We even feel stress in our stomachs and bowels! Though this is a natural
process, we never really learn how to appropriately release this built-up
stress. This can be remedied through deep breathing, body awareness, yoga,
exercise, meditation and massage. Massage is great for stress relief because it
teaches your body how it feels to be relaxed, making it easier to get to that
state on your own. Relieving stress can even help you heal faster: massage
increases the blood and lymph flow, which helps to detoxify and oxygenate your
blood and tissues.
Q. What
can I expect during a massage?
A. Our main focus at
Beautiful Smiles and Beyond! is relaxation! This means soft lights, tranquil
music, a heated table, and a warm neck wrap. There are several types of massage
and I will work with you prior to the massage in order to determine your
particular needs. At this point, I will leave the room and you will be able to
remove as much (or as little) clothing as you are comfortable with. You will
always be comfortably covered with a blanket, so most people leave on only the
undergarments. I do recommend that bras are removed, so that I can relax your
shoulders and back. The most important element of a massage is communication.
Throughout the experience, you can let me know what works and what is
comfortable for you. By working together, I know we can find a massage solution
that will become a part of your health and well-being plan.
A. Yes, but only once
you are into your 2nd trimester, and you have permission from your OB/Gyn.
Massage is a wonderful way to increase circulation and bring relief to sore
backs and tired, achy feet. Pregnancy massage differs slightly in client
positioning and, as always, your personal comfort is of the utmost
importance.
Q. What
about massage for children?
A. Absolutely! We need
to teach our children at a young age how to de-stress. Deep breathing and body
awareness are topics I cover with all of my clients. Children are open to new
experiences and learn quickly. If your child has a hard time sitting still for
any length of time, I can work with him or her and teach different techniques
to calm the mind and body.
Q. Is
massage good for a cancer patient?
A. No, massage is not
recommended for people with active cancer who are receiving treatment. Once the
disease is in remission, massage can be considered with the permission of the
attending physician. The exception to this rule is if the patient is terminally
ill and a massage would make him or her more comfortable in a Hospice
situation. In any case, we ask that you consult your physician before having
any kind of massage services performed.
Q. I am
diabetic, can I have a massage?
A. Usually yes, check
with your physician and click here to
read additional information about diabetes and massage.
Q. I've
heard that infrared saunas can help with
detoxification. Is that true? A. Yes, absolutely!
The FIR Sauna increases heart rate and blood circulation without raising blood
pressure. This helps the body purge toxins. So, what does this mean for you?
Releasing toxins aids in weight loss, better circulation, extra energy, and can
even give your skin a healthy glow. Frequent treatments result in better blood
circulation and an improved metabolism, too!
Q. When
should I use the infrared sauna?
A. Anytime, but we
especially recommend using it prior to your massages. The heat loosens the
muscle tissue, which allows the therapist to give a more relaxing and effective
massage. Infrared saunas are also great during the recovery period from an
injury. The heat from the sauna brings oxygen to joints and extremities, thus
speeding healing and reducing the pain of strains and sprains. Finally, the
infrared sauna is a nice escape from the cold during those icy winter months!
Not only is the heat wonderful for chilled muscles, but it also helps give your
immune system a boost when you need it most.
Q. Is
the infrared sauna safe for me to use?
A. For most healthy
people, yes! If you are pregnant, menstruating, taking certain medications, or
have a chronic medical condition, it's best to check with your doctor prior to
using the sauna. Click here for more
important information regarding the infrared sauna.
